Obituary of Eric Stanley Hutchings

It is with deep love and sadness that the family of Eric Stanley Hutchings announces his peaceful passing at the age of 70, on May 18th, at GlenHaven Manor in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, following the natural progression of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Born in Deer Lake, Newfoundland, on May 7, 1955, Eric was the youngest of six sons of Olga and George Hutchings. He spent the past several months in New Glasgow to be closer to family during his illness, having previously lived in Sackville, Nova Scotia for 28 years.

Eric married the love of his life, Cheryl, in 1980. Together, they built a home full of laughter and love, raising two children, Terry and Alison (Greg), and later becoming proud grandparents to Jeremy and Alexander who affectionately called him their Bampy. Cheryl passed away in February 2023, and their bond remains an enduring part of Eric’s story.

Eric spent his career in the airline industry, working with EPA, Canadian, and Air Canada before retiring in 2017. His work brought him lifelong friendships and a strong sense of camaraderie—his colleagues were more like extended family. He was known for his sociable nature, his ability to strike up a conversation with anyone, and his gift for finding common ground with everyone he met.

He was happiest surrounded by family and friends, enjoying a cold beer, a good chat, and a Jays game on the patio. Eric and Cheryl shared close friendships with their neighbours, with whom they traveled abroad, making memories and savoring European beers along the way. His love for dogs was also well known—he lit up in their presence and always had time for a four-legged friend.

Eric was predeceased by his wife, Cheryl, his parents, Olga and George, and his brother, Dick. He is lovingly remembered by his children, grandchildren, brothers, extended family, and the many friends and neighbors who became like family over the years.

A celebration of Eric’s life will be held on Friday, May 23, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Maritime Cremation Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA in Eric’s memory, honoring his deep affection for dogs.
