Obituary of George Robert Groves

A loving husband, father, grandfather, and proud military veteran, Bob Groves passed away peacefully on March 11, 2026. Born in Truro, NS on December 12, 1937, he was the son of the late George and Jennie (Richardson) Groves.

Bob joined the RCAF at an early age, quickly rising to the rank of Sergeant (Military Police), and was commissioned from the ranks to an Officer in 1974. He had a distinguished military career taking him across Canada, Europe and the Middle East with the United Nations. He was awarded the Canadian Decoration twice, the Jubilee Medal, NATO recognition for four years' service in 1960's, and a UN medal as Truce Observation Supervisor during the 1978 Israeli-Lebanese conflict. He took his release from the military after 27 years. Bob then assumed the position of Director, Safety & Security at Acadia University, a role he held for over 20 years. In 2017, he was presented with the Senate of Canada 150 medal, recognizing his contribution to life and security at Acadia and Canadian society in general. He was a long-time member of the Wolfville Lions Club, serving as President on two occasions, as well as an active member of the Bedford Art Society. In later years, he served with the Condo Quay Board of Directors for six years, five of which were as President. Bob enjoyed sports and was an avid golfer since 1958. He was an excellent hockey player, and enjoyed playing until age 64. He also enjoyed softball and baseball as a player, organizer and coach. Bob was always active and made friends easily, going out of his way to help others and build communities. He enjoyed sketching and often shared cartoons to channel his excellent sense of humor. A talented artist, he did many original paintings that hang in the homes of friends and family. Bob was a handyman, woodworker, world traveller, commercial grape grower, coin collector, who enjoyed bowling and daily walks with his friends into his mid eighties.

Bob is survived by his wife of 66 years; Iva Lorraine (Laurie) Groves, and daughter Cathy Prinzie of London, Ont., son Stephen Groves (Juanita) of Halifax, as well as grandchildren Jordan Prinzie, Gloria Prinzie, Brandon (Claudia) Groves, Colin Groves and his great grandchildren. He will be missed by his friends and family and best remembered for his excellent sense of humour, driving grandchildren on his tractor, and building 10-foot snowmen at Christmas. He is also survived by his sister, Betty (John) Dornan, Truro, NS and was predeceased by two brothers, Donald and Clarey.

The family would like to express our sincere thanks to the kind Nurses and Doctors at the QE2 Hematology Unit and at the Infirmary for their care.

At his request, cremation has taken place, and a funeral service will not be arranged. A celebration of life will be held at a later date for family and friends.
