Obituary of Alice Braybrooke

Alice Boyd (Noble) Braybrooke passed away peacefully on April 8, 2026, at the age of 97.

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, she grew up largely in Missouri and Ohio before attending Radcliffe College and then Cornell University, where she received a BA. In 1963 she and her young family moved to Halifax, where she spent the remainder of her life. She received a BLS in 1967 and began working at the Killam Library at Dalhousie University, continuing there until her retirement. After retiring she travelled extensively with Elderhostel, making more than 70 trips across North America and Europe, and said she had visited everywhere she had ever wanted to go. She loved Baroque music, chocolate, all animals, and reading, especially mysteries. She had a lifelong interest in geology and archaeology. She made the world’s best birthday cake.

She is survived by her children, Nicholas (Christina), Vancouver, BC and Elizabeth (Nicholas Portman), Sackville, NB, three grandchildren, Kit Braybrooke, Basel, Switzerland; John (Azanda) Braybrooke, Vancouver, BC; and Frank (Shannon) Portman, Toronto, ON, as well as two great grandchildren, Clara and Dawn Portman, Toronto, ON. She was predeceased by her son Geoffrey and grandson Hugh Portman.

If desired, donations may be made in her memory to Hope for Wildlife or the Canadian Wildlife Federation.
