John Smeltzer

Obituary of John Bendell Smeltzer

85 of Lower Sackville, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2020 at the Dartmouth General Hospital, with his family by his side. Born in Halifax on April 10, 1935, he was a son of the late Elizabeth and Harold Smeltzer.

Dad and Mom enjoyed many years of camping together where he loved to sit around the campfire with his many special friends, play guitar and sing late into the night.

John is survived by his daughters, Wendy (Alex) Birrell and Caroline (Paul) Muise; granddaughters, Emily, Kate, Haley and Carley. He will be missed by his four-legged companion, River. John was predeceased by his loving wife of 61 years, Betty; brothers, Harold, Robert and sister, Florence and many nieces and nephews.

We would like to thank Dr. Mayelin Figueroa-Perez for the care and compassion she gave Dad in the past year. As well we wish to thank Dr. Chang and the nursing staff of the 4th floor who gave us so much of their valuable time, care and compassion during these very busy and difficult times. We would also like to thank all of the nursing staff from Northwood Home Care that assisted me with Dads care over the past year.

As per John’s wishes there will be no service. There will be a family celebration of life and interment for both Dad and Mom at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the QEII Health Science Centre Foundation or a charity of your choice.
