Dorothy Stark

Obituary of Dorothy Marie Stark

She had a loving heart but her heart was too weak to go on.  It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a beloved wife and mother, Dorothy Stark, of Halifax after a lengthy battle with Heart Disease and Kidney Disease. Dorothy passed away peacefully with her family by her side November 28, 2024 in the QEII Health Sciences Centre at the age of 81.  Born March 17, 1943, she was the daughter of the late Rémi and Aimée (Comeau) Melanson.

She will be sadly missed by her loving husband, Alvin, of 58 years, devoted daughter, Andrea Colbourne, and son-in-law Anthony who she loved like one of her own, special sister-in-law Norma Melanson, special nieces, nephews and their families who she cherished dearly, extended family, many close friends, neighbours, and music group friends, who all meant so much to her.  She was predeceased by her sons, Allen and Danny who she deeply missed and thought of each and every day, and her brother Norman Melanson.

Her family was her pride and joy and she was so proud of her children’s accomplishments and loved the many long chats they had together.  Sunday dinner with her family was always something she looked forward to.  She grew up in Lower Concession, Digby County, and always enjoyed her frequent visits spending quality time with her extended family.  She met the love of her life, Alvin, and they moved to Halifax to start careers and raise a family.  She turned her focus on raising their three children and when the kids got older she returned to work in various Halifax hospitals, quickly adapting to many technology changes that occurred over the years.  In her early years she played the piano and in her later years she learned to play the keyboard and would sometimes play at weekly music jams she and Alvin would attend.  She wanted to keep up with the times learning how to use social media and sending texts.  She loved animals, especially her beautiful and loving cat, Sophie.  She loved to travel, and loved spending time enjoying her flower garden.  She was so caring, giving, and thought of everyone else before herself.  Dorothy was a devoted parishioner of St. Benedict Parish.

Cremation has taken place.  In keeping with Dorothy’s wishes, there will be a graveside service at Notre Dame du Mont Carmel Cemetery in Concession on December 14th at 1PM, so she can be buried with her boys. Donations may be made to Souls Harbour Rescue Mission (a charity she supported) or any charity of your choice.
