To the MacDonald family. I had the pleasure of working with Jim over many years beginning in the Probation office in Bedford in the late 1980's. As a new probation officer Jim quickly became a mentor . I learned to rely on his knowledge and his compassionate and caring approach to our clientele. Also we recognized our gaelic/celtic connection early on and as result had many discussions about that which Jim was obviously quite passionate. Jim often spoke proudly of his boys his wife Helen and his love of family. Jim was a true gentleman and this world was made richer because of his time with us. Grant eternal rest unto him and may perpetual light shine upon him. May God bless his family and hold them close during their grief.

Dear Helen and family. I worked with Jim at the Halifax Probation Office when it was on Young Street. He was always a gentleman and kind leader. Humble and well liked by all staff. We always liked to talk about cars. It seemed to be a common interest of ours for some reason. Take care in knowing he always treated everyone with respect and dignity.

Dear Helen & Family,
My most sincere condolences go out to you at this very sad time.
Jim and I met unofficially when we both applied for a job in Sydney with the John Howard Society in 1971 as we both had the interview on the same night. Later we became friends when we both worked with the Department of Justice as Senior Probation Officers.
I’m not sure if Jim remembers being screeched in when we both attended a National Corrections Conference in Stephenville, Newfoundland in the mid ‘80’s. We shared many positive memories of our years with the Department of Justice.
It was such a pleasure to continue our friendship after we both retired. I so appreciated the fact that the two of you travelled to Springhill when my mother passed away in 2012. I always looked forward to our phone calls as we shared updates on our fellow probation officers as well as personal occurrences in our lives. It has been devastating to learn of Jim’s deteriorating health and to realize that there would be no treatment available to extend his life. He was a fine man and a dedicated and committed Probation Officer. He will be dearly missed.
I’m so sorry we were unable to travel to the service but we learned of the date too late to attend.
Sincerely,
Clarence Falconer

Dear Helen, Shamus and Scott:
We were deeply saddened when we received Scott’s phone call that his dad had passed away. Our two families have known each other for about 35 years, so it felt like a personal loss to us too. One of the last times we saw Jim, he was telling us about the “road to nowhere.” It sounded like a fascinating time, experiencing the North. We certainly benefited from his work experience, like the time he dissuaded our son, Matthew, from volunteering at Dorchester Penitentiary! Our sincere sympathies. We share your sadness and loss.
All our love,
Lydia & Robert Jack
