Obituary of Dave Camp

William David “Dave” Camp

 

Passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2023. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late William and Alice (Earle) Camp. He is survived by four daughters, Janice(David) Tissington, Bathurst NB, Vicki (Chris) Holmes, London Ontario, Christene (Blair) LeBlanc, Lower Sackville and Diane (Jim) Buckle, Indian Harbour; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He is also survived by sister, Beverly (late Kenneth) Boon; four nieces, two nephews and special friend, Margaret Baydar. He was predeceased by his wife, Holley (Lohnes) and brothers, Graham and Stephen. 

 

A graduate of St. Mary's University, he served three years with 111 Coy RCASC and spent approximately forty years in policing and corrections in Nova Scotia, PEI and New Brunswick. He served as Sergeant with the Dartmouth City Police, as Chief Instructor at the Atlantic Police Academy, Chief of the Bathurst City Police, Executive Director of the New Brunswick Police Commission, and Deputy Superintendent/Security at the Halifax Correction Centre. He served in executive positions in various police organizations at local, provincial and national levels and was a former Chair of the Atlantic Crime Prevention Society.

 

He lectured at the Military Police Training Academy, CFB Borden, Ontario, and to senior police officers in Croatia, Bosnia and Romania and guest lectured at The Maritime School of Social Work, St Mary's University and the Forestry School at the University of New Brunswick. After retirement he served six years with the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires. He was a Life Member of Somme Branch 31, Royal Canadian Legion where he served in several executive positions including one term as President.

 

Dave was well known as a hockey player, ball player, golfer and bowler in all three Maritime  Provinces. He was a former member of Brightwood, Belvedere, Gowan Brae, Ken Wo and Hartlens Point Golf Clubs. He especially enjoyed renovating cottages in Kings and Lunenburg Counties and playing guitar and singing at Police and Legion functions.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2PM on Saturday, June 10, 2023 at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 31, 54 King Street, Dartmouth, NS.
