Dear Carol Ann,
I was both shocked and saddened to hear of Mike's passing. Mike worked for me in Emirates. He was a great operator, very supportive and always willing to go the extra mile to improve anything he thought was worth reviewing, this, across the airline. He was always calm in spite of operational challenges we faced from time to time. He was hugely liked and respected by our staff and his peers.
I do recall Mike talking of cats, but hadn't realised to what extent you both got involved with them in Dubai. My only disappointment was the day Mike came to see me to tell me he was leaving and returning to "Nouffy" (phonetically spelt). He was a very hard act to follow. I was honoured to have known him and have in my team.
Carol Ann, my profound condolances to you and your family. Rest in Peace Mike. God's blessings to you all.

Carolann. I have so many memories of Michael going all the way back to his early days in Bridgeport, back when he was wearing a brace on his leg. He went on to become such a graceful athlete in baseball and hockey. I worked hard and fell short. There are three actions that Michael took which directly affected my life. In February 1981 I was in Halifax with 2 job offers, one for Sydney that paid okay, and one for Calgary that paid very well. I was cautious to a fault so tended to the Sydney offer but Michael offered to go to Calgary with me if we used my car. He had been accepted to attend the TCTI in Cornwall that coming October and wanted one last adventure before that, so off we went. It was a great drive with unexpected adventures at the other end. While there I settled into a comfortable job as a draftsman and estimator for an engineering firm, saving money to go to engineering school, but Michael thought I should try something else (the savings were accruing slowly and U of A engineering wasn't cheap.) . Out of the blue he brought home papers to apply for Air Traffic Control, which I did, passing the test but not the eye exam, so I ended up with the weather service. (I was in and out of TCTI before he got there). Both were utterly life altering decisions that flowed from an action by Michael. We stayed in touch while he rose thru the ranks with Transport, to Air Nova then the big move to Dubai. I mentioned my awe at his move and lifestyle asking flippantly whether they had a weather service. I was doing aviation and Marine forecasting out of Gander at the time, mid-winter if memory serves me right. He asked that I send a resume, which I assumed was just him being polite, but a British meteorologist got back quickly offering an interview. The note referenced good pay and a subsidized apartment. I had 2 young sons and a home with a big backyard, and I saw the word "apartment". I balked and regret it on some level to this day. Michael chased opportunity in life and had no compunction to tell others like myself that they could and should look more broadly. He was a great friend and I miss him. The donation was made to the SPCA in Sydney.

Carol Ann, it was with shock and sadness I received notice that Mike had passed on.
I personally remember well when Mike and yourself joined the Air Nova start-up team in 1986. Mike's aviation career, to put it simply, was absolutely awesome. Opening at the Sydney Airport and closing at the Sydney Airport. His was a career of accomplishment, with your support and, obviously, the love of his life.
Mike has passed on. However, angels and robins are singing, "Hey! Hear the news. Mike has joined our Flight Division team."
Please accept my sincere condolences. Earl Winsor (Former VP, Air Nova)

Carol Anne and Family,
We are shocked and saddened to hear of Mike’s passing. We have known Mike since the beginnings of Air Nova and bonded over a mutual love of the Habs, the Tragically Hip, and music. He loved to share music and his infamous casettes were the soundtrack of many a vacation. Mike would hand you a tape, and you just knew it would be good. We have many fond memories of our time with Mike and Carol Anne in Dubai where he was the best of hosts, taking us to the beach, Eat and Drink, and the swim up bar! We have fond memories of our time there and the pride ‘Mr. Mike’ took in showing us around his new home. Mike was great company, fun, funny, not to mention a great conversationalist. No matter how much time had passed, you could always pick up where you left off. Such a loss, and far too early.
Keeping you in our thoughts and caring deeply about the heartache that remains. May you rest in peace, Mr. Mike.
Our sincere condolences,
Craig and Lise Squires

Albert, Carol Ann and MacKinnon Clan,
Dear Albert and Clan,
I was taken aback when I read my Cape Breton Post today and saw dear Michael's Obituary. Albert, you had told me earlier of Michael's illness but still it was a shock. Michael indeed did have a productive 63 year life and I am impressed with his life's History in which he had so many accomplishments. In addition to Carol Ann's beautiful Obituary, one could add Michael's athletic ability as a hockey player with both the Glace Bay Miners Junior AND Senior teams. Additionally, I understand that while working in the Middle East, Mike played in an exhibition hockey game against a visiting Soviet Union team who had as Goal Tender, Tretiak -famous goalie from the famous Canada-Russian series. .Apparently Mike scored the first goal against Tretiak and the Tretiak goal stick is now in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
Sincere condolences on the loss of a great person and family member.

Thanks for the condolences Xavier. In addition to scoring on Tretiak, Michael also has his hockey stick in the Hockey Hall of Fame. He scored the winning goal in the United Arab Emirates National Championship Game in 1999 while playing with Team Nokia. The curator for the International Exhibits of the Hall wanted the stick from the winning scorer. They went through the score sheet to confirm who it was and voila it was Michael. He was quite excited sharing this news with family and friends

Michael was a student of mine in Grade 11 French at St, Michael High in Glace Bay. He was a quiet student and pleasant to have in class. I saw him only twice after he graduated. Once at the wedding of his brother Donald (another former student) to my cousin Lisa, and once at the airport when he was returning to Dubai after a vacation home. My sincere condolences to his wife, to his parents, to his siblings, and to the extended family.
